Welcome

Leather chemicals manufacturer Royal Smit & Zoon proudly presents its Environment, Social, Governance (ESG) report 2023. Based on our ESG Roadmap 2025 commitments, the report demonstrates how we continue to dedicate strong efforts towards our long-term goals. It outlines our progress and challenges in fulfilling our mission ‘to create a socially and environmentally sustainable leather value chain, together’. By highlighting insights from our first double materiality assessment and key stakeholder topics, the strategic priorities identified will serve as a crucial foundation for developing our current ESG Roadmap 2025 into an enhanced ESG Strategy 2030 throughout 2024. By aligning with our company strategy, we aim to maintain our leadership in ESG practices while bringing long-term value to both our company and society.

ESG Landscape

All the elements that add up to our ESG report condense into this one motto: Creating Sustainable Leather Together. In everything we do, from R&D to our production facilities, from our engagements within and beyond the industry, to educational efforts and the various initiatives we support, we recognize our responsibility towards the future of leather.

Our Strategy

The heart of our strategy is creating sustainable leather together, keeping in mind the continuity of our family-owned company, building on its rich history since 1821. This context of ‘taking care of the next generation’ is not only relevant in the family setting, but it is also something that affects our customers, industry partners, and other stakeholders.

Achievements

“In 2023, we made progress in some important projects: We were proud to achieve the EcoVadis Platinum rating (from Gold in 2022 and 2021), next to renewing our Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Conformance Level 3 certifications and maintaining ISO certifications for all our production entities. We established ESG targets for all key management positions and specific job holders participating in our incentive program. Moreover, we launched a training program for our Sales Partners on the safe management and handling of chemicals, and continued and expanded our multi-year training program on the Employee Code of Conduct. Strong efforts were dedicated to education, demonstrating our thought leadership, and we shared our knowledge through guest lectures to 27 partner tanneries, 57 brands and 7 educational institutions. With our profound belief in the ‘Power of Partnerships’, we continued our involvement in key industry networks and organizations, including Leather Working Group, Sustainable Leather Foundation, ZDHC, and Leather Naturally. After all, the key to progress in creating a sustainable leather value chain lies in continuing to collaborate with you, our partners and stakeholders.”
